Services Provided

On this page you can find out about the services that Robert Doig Optometrists offer to our patients

  • Eye Examination
Your optometrist will do various tests and procedures, depending on what your needs and symptoms are. A sight test will be included.

    • Sometimes, your optometrist may not be able to do all the tests and procedures during one appointment or may need to repeat a procedure. If so, they will ask you to come back for a follow-up appointment. You will not have to pay for this.

    • Your optometrist may give you eye drops to see inside your eyes more easily. You should not drive immediately afterwards.

    • Ask as many questions as you want about your eye examination. If there are any tests or procedures you donít want, tell your optometrist. You can refuse any part of the examination.

    • Allow plenty of time for the examination. The eye test should take about 30 minutes and you may need more time for extra procedures or to choose glasses.

    • If you need help to get to your appointment because of an illness or disability, you can ask about a home visit.

This information has been taken from "Your guide to free NHS eye examinations in Scotland" provided by NHS Scotland

  • OCT (Optical coherence tomography)
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an established medical imaging technique that uses light to capture micrometer-resolution, three-dimensional images from within optical scattering media (e.g., biological tissue). Optical coherence tomography is based on low-coherence interferometry, typically employing near-infrared light. The use of relatively long wavelength light allows it to penetrate into the scattering medium. Confocal microscopy, another optical technique, typically penetrates less deeply into the sample but with higher resolution. (Ref: Wikipedia)

The NHS do not cover the cost of OCT scans though. There is a charge of £15 to get this done.

further information on an OCT scan can be found here

  • Contact Lens Fits
For first time wearers of contact lenses there will be a one of charge of £40. Previous wearers that start to order contact lenses from us will have a one off charge of £20.  During a contact lens fitting appointment the patient will be shown how to insert & remove lens from eye. How to clean and look after lens. A pair of lenses will also be given to the patient to take away and try. If the patient experiences any problems they should contact us as soon as possible.

  • Contact Lens Aftercare
All contact lens patients should have their eyes checked on a yearly basis, to make sure there is no damage being caused by insertion and removal of contact lenses from the eye. Also to check if there is any change in prescription.

  • Domiciliary Service (Home Visits)
We provide a service that brings the eye tests to the patients home if they are housebound. To do this though, we will need a letter from the patients doctor requesting this be done.
  • Diabetic Screening
We provide the diabetic screening programme for the Western Isles. This is provided from our shops in Stornoway and Balivanich. We also travel to Barra twice a year. We also provide a domiciliary service for house bound patients. This is done on a referral basis from the patients doctor. We cannot do a home visit without this letter.

  • Colour Overlay Test
There is now scientific research to show that both coloured filters (worn as spectacles) and coloured plastic sheets laid over text (known as overlays) can help some children to read. We provide the test to decide if filters or overlays would benefit a child to help with their reading.
  • Spectacle sales, fitting and repairs
We provide a large range of frames from budget to designer. A list of the range we carry can be found here. We do a full fitting of glasses to make sure the patient gets the full benefit from their new spectacles. We also do a range of repairs to glasses. Most of these can be done in store, but on occasion we may have to send them away to get repaired.
